Which level?
Is Intermediate the right level?
Placement is a guide, not a pass/fail test. You don't need to be perfect to move up — you need to apply your basic skills in rallies with reasonable consistency. It's based on overall volleyball understanding, not just serving or hitting.
Teen Intermediates is right if they can…
Apply your skills within structured rallies, systems and game situations. For players with reliable foundations who contribute to rallies, make basic decisions and know where to move.
- Serve over the net consistently from the full court
- Pass, set and attack with reasonable control and try to create three contacts
- Know where to stand before the serve and where to move during the rally
- Move after contact instead of watching the ball
- Communicate, take responsibility for the ball and make basic decisions without being told
Start in Teen Fundamentals if they…
Build the technical and movement foundations. For complete beginners, and players who can do some skills in drills but are still learning to use them in rallies.
- Still developing basic passing, setting, serving or movement technique
- Can do some skills in controlled drills but struggle to use them in rallies
- Need regular reminders about court position, rotation or the next action
- Often send the ball over because you're unsure what else to do
- Still building confidence, communication and the willingness to move for the ball
Teen Fundamentals →Not sure? Start in Fundamentals. Coaches use the same benchmarks for placement and move players across when they're ready.
Check yourself — is Intermediates right for you?
Ask yourself these questions. Answer for what you usually do in a rally, not your best day or what you can do in a drill. Mostly yes means Teen Intermediates is the right room. Mostly not yet means Teen Fundamentals will move you forward faster. Intermediates doesn't need perfect technique, just understanding why each skill matters and trying it in game situations. Your coach uses the same benchmarks for everyone and will tell you what to work on next.
- Can I pass a ball with control when it is not directly in front of me?
- Can I serve over the net consistently and choose a target?
- Do I know where to stand before the serve and where I am trying to pass?
- Do I know where to move after I pass, set or attack?
- Do I actively try to create three contacts when the situation allows it?
- Can I decide what to do without waiting for the coach to tell me?
- When I make a mistake, do I stay involved and try again?
