Assistant coaching

Learn to coach by doing it. Work alongside an experienced club coach in a weekly class and take on more of the session as you grow, from watching and helping to leading it yourself. Open to anyone who wants to coach: members, social players, rep players and parents.

The pathway

Four stages, at your own pace

  1. 1
    Stage one
    Observe
Watch how your Main Coach runs the session: how it is structured, what each drill is for, how they explain a skill and how they give feedback.
  2. 2
    Stage two
    Assist
Start helping: demonstrations, feeding balls, organising groups, running warm-ups and giving players simple feedback and encouragement.
  3. 3
    Stage three
    Lead parts of the session
Take a drill or a section yourself: explain it, demonstrate it, correct technique, and adjust it when it is too hard or too easy.
  4. 4
    Stage four
    Lead under supervision
Run most or all of a session while your Main Coach watches and backs you up.
Observe, assist, practise, lead, get feedback, improve, then lead on your own. You move through the stages when you are ready, not on a timetable. Some people take longer, some get there sooner, and both are fine.
Who it's for

Anyone who wants to learn to coach

You don't need coaching experience, and you don't need to be a rep player. Class members, social players, rep players and parents all assistant coach with us. What matters is that you are keen, reliable and coachable.

You'll do well if you…
  • Turn up every week. Your class is counting on you
  • Ask questions when you are unsure
  • Take initiative: set up, help players who need it, and ask what you can take on
  • Take feedback and try it again next session
  • Help keep the session safe, positive and welcoming
What you'll learn
  • The game: serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking, defence, movement and basic systems
  • How to demonstrate a skill and give clear, simple instructions
  • How to spot common errors and give feedback that helps
  • How to make a drill easier or harder for different players
  • How every activity connects back to the game
What you get

A mentor, not just a job to do

Mentoring
Every session
Your Main Coach talks you through the plan beforehand, gives you a clear job, and afterwards tells you one thing to keep doing, one to improve and what to focus on next.
Review
Every term
A proper look at how you're going: communication, demonstration, feedback, game understanding, leadership and more.
Rep players
Discount
Rep players who assistant-coach a weekly class get a discounted season. It's how most of our coaches started.
Every assistant coach holds a current Volleyball NSW membership. Anyone helping with under-18 classes also needs a current NSW Working With Children Check.
Becoming a coach

What moving up to Coach looks like

Run the session
Run a warm-up and a drill, organise players, and take responsibility for a session with a professional attitude.
Teach the skill
Explain and demonstrate fundamental skills, explain why an activity matters, and give the right technical feedback.
Read the room
Connect skills to the game, adapt an activity when it isn't working, and keep players engaged and positive.
Finishing a term doesn't automatically make you a Coach. When you can do these confidently, your Main Coach will tell you you're ready.
